Selong Belanak Surf Guide & Beaches

A wide curve of soft white sand and shallow, turquoise water, Selong Belanak is the beach that put this stretch of coast on the map. The bay is broad, clean and rarely crowded, with green hills rising behind the sand and coconut palms leaning over the shoreline. Gentle, rolling waves and a sandy bottom make it ideal for swimming and wading, and the calm, shallow shorebreak is safe enough for children to splash in.

It is also the area's main beginner-surf beach, with surf schools and board rentals working straight off the sand — a relaxed, low-pressure place to catch a first wave. Stay for the evening: the bay faces west, and the sunset over the water is the highlight of many visitors' day.

Just around the headland west of the main bay, Serangan is a quiet reef break that comes alive in the wet season (roughly October to April), when the prevailing winds blow offshore and groom it into a clean, consistent right-hander. The wave peels along the reef in a long, playful wall — room for open-face turns and the occasional barrel section — and holds its shape well at head height. It best suits confident intermediates and experienced surfers.

There is little here beyond a simple warung on the sand and a few laid-back bungalows: no surf shops, rentals or schools, and rarely a crowd. In the dry season the wind tends to swing onshore, so Serangan is at its best when the exposed breaks elsewhere are blown out.

About 15 minutes west of Selong Belanak, Mawi is one of South Lombok's best-known surf breaks, set in a dramatic bay framed by steep, rocky hills. It fires in the dry season (around May to September), when offshore southeast trade winds meet southwest swells rolling in from the Indian Ocean.

The main wave is a punchy left-hand reef break that throws steep take-offs, powerful walls and the occasional hollow section over shallow coral; on smaller days a more forgiving right-hand peak can offer fun rides for confident intermediates. This is not a beginner wave — currents are strong, the reef is sharp and shallow, and swimming is not recommended — but for experienced surfers it is a raw, uncrowded session of the kind that is getting harder to find.

At the far eastern tip of Selong Belanak Bay, Tomang-Oamang is a secluded stretch named after the local 'tomang' and 'omang' crabs that live among its rocks. It is a place for slow exploration rather than surf: dramatic rock formations and clear, shallow tide pools make low tide the best time to visit, when small marine life gathers in the exposed reef flats and the shoreline is good for wading and shell-collecting.

Only a short walk or drive from the busy main beach, it feels like a hidden cove, and it is especially photogenic at golden hour when long shadows fall across the rocks. Take care with the currents here.

Towards the eastern end of the coast, Pantai Semeti is a secluded cove known for its surreal volcanic rock formations and cliffside scenery. Fine white sand meets jagged, weathered rock and clear turquoise water, and at low tide the rocks trap natural pools — often called 'aquariums' — where small reef fish gather.

It is a tranquil, largely untouched spot that rewards visitors with some of the most striking landscapes on this part of the coast. Bring footwear that can handle rock, and check the tide before you go.

Pantai Kecil is a small, low-key cove for travellers who want a quiet picnic away from the busier sand. It is largely undeveloped with no facilities, so bring your own water, food, shade and sunscreen. Rocky walls form a natural enclosure that gives the beach a sheltered, private feel — ideal for a small group.

It is an easy walk or short scooter ride from Selong Belanak, yet feels like a tiny world of its own — a peaceful contrast to the main bay, and a good spot to slow down for an afternoon.
