The village’s growing dining scene means each day can include different food without driving to Kuta.

This itinerary is designed to flex. Families and non-surfers can substitute swimming, a long lunch or a quiet cove whenever experienced surfers head to reef breaks. Beginner surfers should prioritise Selong Belanak regardless of season. Confident surfers can choose Serangan more often from approximately October to April and Mawi around May to September, subject to current wind, swell and tide.

Choose accommodation before arranging activities. Staying near the main beach makes cafés, surf schools and sunset easy to reach. Serangan, Torok and Tampah suit travellers seeking more seclusion, while hilltop villas exchange walkability for views. Check transport after dark if your chosen restaurant is not within walking distance.

Start early with coffee or breakfast in the village. Bambini is a coffee-led option, while local cafés and warungs cover everything from brunch and smoothie bowls to Indonesian breakfasts. Going early leaves the coolest part of the morning for the beach and gives beginners a chance to speak with surf schools before lessons become busy.

Spend the middle of the day at Selong Belanak Beach. If you are learning to surf, book a lesson rather than renting a board with no guidance. The sandy-bottom shorebreak is forgiving by South Lombok standards, but an instructor helps with positioning, board control and local etiquette. Non-surfers can swim when conditions are calm, walk the bay or settle under shade with a view of the hills.

Leave the hottest hours flexible. Return to your hotel pool, have a slow lunch or explore the village’s shops and cafés. Coco works as a simple ice-cream and gift stop; lunch choices range from Indonesian warungs to pizza, salads and international café food.

Return to the beach for late afternoon. Selong Belanak’s west-facing bay makes sunset part of the day rather than a separate excursion. For dinner, choose according to energy: Pronto for casual pizza, Kind Warung for Indonesian comfort food, a beachfront restaurant for sand-and-sea atmosphere, or a rooftop or cocktail venue for a longer evening.

Beginners should return to Selong Belanak for a second lesson. Progress often comes faster from two shorter coached sessions than from one long, exhausting day. A second morning also lets an instructor adjust board size and choose a better tide based on what happened on day one.

From roughly October to April, confident intermediate and advanced surfers can consider Serangan. Its right-hand reef break may benefit from wet-season wind patterns, but it still needs a same-day check. Ask locally about swell, tide, entry and exit points. Anyone without reef experience should remain at Selong Belanak or enjoy Serangan from the beach.

From around May to September, experienced surfers may prefer Mawi. The dry-season left is faster, shallower and more powerful, with strong currents and a reef bottom. It is not a step-up lesson for beginners. Non-surfing companions can create a separate day around Selong Belanak, a scenic drive, a café or a quieter beach rather than waiting uncomfortably beside a difficult break.

End the day somewhere relaxed. Segara and the Serangan coast suit a quieter beachfront meal; Selong Belanak offers the widest dinner choice; and the hills provide sunset viewpoints and restaurants where available. Avoid riding unfamiliar roads after drinking, and arrange a driver if the evening venue is distant from your accommodation.

Use the final day to see why Selong Belanak works as a base rather than an isolated beach. West and east of the main bay, the coastline shifts between sheltered sand, rocky headlands, reef and steep green hills. The most useful choice depends on weather and how much driving you want.

Tampah Beach offers a spacious coastal setting and established places to stop for food or drinks. Biras sits directly on the sand with all-day dining, coffee, cocktails and a programme that can include yoga, volleyball, demonstrations, movie nights or beach bonfires. Activities change, so treat the published programme as something to confirm rather than a promise.

Torok and nearby hills appeal to travellers interested in viewpoints, villas and quieter resort settings. Alternatively, choose a small cove or tide-pool beach from the site’s Beaches & Surfing guide. Rocky locations are best approached with suitable footwear and attention to tide and current; they are scenery-and-exploration stops, not automatic swimming beaches.

A slower option is equally valid. Spend a final morning at Selong Belanak, have lunch somewhere you missed, and use the afternoon for a massage, pool time or a café. A good itinerary should leave enough space to repeat the part of the destination you enjoyed most.

Stay close to Selong Belanak Beach if walkability, beginner surf and the largest restaurant choice matter most. This area includes boutique hotels, small resorts, bungalows and villas at several comfort levels. It is the simplest choice for a first visit and for groups with mixed interests.

Choose a hostel such as El Mojo when budget and a social atmosphere are priorities. Select an activity-focused hotel such as Kairos if yoga, fitness, climbing or surfskate should be part of the schedule. Families and groups may prefer a private villa with a pool and shared living space, while couples can choose small hotels or bungalows based on quietness, view and beach access.

Stay around Serangan if reef surf and a quieter beachfront matter more than village walkability. Choose Tampah or Torok for resort and villa settings spread along a less busy coastal corridor. Hilltop properties offer views but usually require transport.
