One evening, around 5:30 pm, we watched a local buffalo herd making their way home from a day of grazing, casually ambling along the beach. Friendly dogs frolicked in the water right beside them. There was no setup, no performance — unlike some of the more polished resorts, this is simply life unfolding. Moments like this, unplanned and quietly extraordinary, are what make Selong Belanak feel so alive and authentic.

Paths wind through tobacco fields, past grazing buffalo, and toward headlands and coves most visitors never reach. Telawas and Semeti are both worth the effort: wild rock formations, tide pools, and secluded mini-beaches tucked beneath cliffs. The coast shifts quickly from gentle crescent bays to jagged coral outcrops, offering a variety of moods and textures, each one intimate and unexpected.

A short climb to Bukit Telawas delivers panoramic views over Selong Belanak and the surrounding bays. It’s modest in scale but generous in perspective: a quiet reward for anyone willing to pause and look.

We began our stay in a Poolside Room, simple yet inviting, overlooking the pool with a balcony that framed the gardens and hills — perfect for slipping into the rhythm of the place. Later, we moved to a private villa with its own pool, a space that allowed mornings to stretch and evenings to soften. The largest four-bedroom villa is perfect for families, offering plenty of space for children or friends. Delicious cocktails and snacks were delivered to our villa, making lazy afternoons by the pool all the more indulgent, while a fully equipped kitchen is available if you’d prefer to cook your own meals.

Every bed across the rooms and villas deserves a special mention. I’m very particular about mattresses and sheets, and here they were impeccable — large superking beds with crisp, soft linen. After several nights of restless sleep elsewhere, it was a welcome relief to sink into such comfort. Every corner is considered without ever feeling staged: natural light spills across the floors, textures invite touch, and the surrounding palms and gardens frame the hills beyond.

It's a place where stillness is easy to find, even amid comfort and style.
