Bau Nyale is South Lombok’s best-known festival, when thousands gather on the southern beaches to catch nyale (sea worms) that appear in the shallows. The tradition is tied to the legend of Princess Mandalika, who, the story goes, threw herself into the sea and returned as the worms.

It’s held once a year, usually in February or March, with the exact dates set by the traditional lunar calendar. Expect crowds, music and a lively, celebratory atmosphere along the coast — check locally for the year’s dates if you want to time your visit around it.

The Mandalika International Street Circuit, near Kuta Lombok, has hosted a round of the MotoGP world championship, drawing motorsport fans from across Indonesia and beyond. Race weekends bring a noticeably busier, livelier feel to the whole south-coast region.
